ARP, Jean

1887 - 1966; b Strasbourg; early influences Kandinsky, Delaunay; collaborated with Sophie Taeuber (whom he later married - see SOPHIE TAEUBER-ARP); after his initial abstract work he was attracted to Surrealism and worked on the border between Constructivism and Automatism; many exhibitions before and after WWII; his works are to found in major museums across the USA and Europe; created a mural relief for UNESCO building in Paris; had retrospective at Museum of Modern Art, NY; a complex artist, his work has been widely influential with artists and sought after by collectors, while retaining a naïve and childish quality.
