b 1890; German artist who worked in Paris in the early years of the 20c; his inclination at this time was towards cubism; after 1919 he was in contact with the Bauhaus and after 1923 he turned to a totally geometric abstract style; his work was condemned by the nazi regime as ‘degenerate art’.
