b 1901; French painter; disparaged traditional artistic materials; interested in effect of children’s drawings and graffiti on new art forms; claimed a positive value for the materials he used; refused to distinguish between beautiful and ugly objects yet much of his work shows intelligent and elegant use of organic form in an abstract context; many exhibitions in New York and Paris in a variety of media including work on paper.
