HERBIN, Auguste

1883 - 1960; French painter initially influenced by the Cubist tendency; by 1917 he had become committed to abstraction; in 1949 he wrote thesis on colour theory; his characteristic later works comprised paintings and screenprints in completely flat form using geometric shapes with primary colours.
